Actun Tunichil Muknai

All day Wednesday was spent on the ATM tour. The whole group was split into three smaller groups. My group was: Keri, Tess, Ashlyn, Master Jeans, Courtney, Stephanie and Katie. Before arriving at the caves, we had an hour hike through the jungle. Martin, our tour guide led us to the caves. We had to swim through water before entering the caves. At one point, Martin had everyone in the group shut off their helmet lights and walk/swim for 200 meters in complete darkness. We walked in a line and held onto the person in front of us. It was scary not knowing what was around me and underneath me. We explored the caves for about 3 hours and saw some Mayan ruins and skeletons. Hiking and swimming through the caves was really challenging and definitely risky business. We had to be really careful, especially while climbing down the slippery rocks. Martin was an excellent tour guide and he went out of his way to make sure everyone was having a good time and learning a lot. It felt good to leave the caves and warm up after being cold and wet from the tour. My group hiked back through the jungle to the bus and took the most glorious nap, as we waited for everyone else to get back. That night everyone just hung out at the pool and restaurant in our hotel.
